Light the Earth, Air, and Water
New Exhibition Lights Up Crystal City Water Park

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Water Park will sparkle in April with the Crystal City Business Improvement District’s (BID) latest design project, “Illumination.” The exhibition, curated by a panel of Crystal City stakeholders, showcases three different projects which light the earth, air, and water.

“Crystal City’s growing reputation as a hub for creative expression helped drive a significant response for Illumination’s design call,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “We received such a diverse range of thoughtful proposals that the exhibition has expanded in both footprint and impact.”

Though originally envisioned as a project grounded in the Water Park’s six grass pedestals, the Crystal City BID embraced the creativity of the submissions to spread the design into the “Air” and “Water” aspects of the space, as well as the Earth. All six mounds (earth) will be covered with “Illuminated Towers”, a series of multi-level structures made of 1”x2” pine and colorfully illuminated from within by solar-powered LED light fixtures. Above the mounds (air), up to six “Crystal Chandeliers” will hang from the Water Park’s signature Sycamore trees designed as both wind chimes producing pleasant tones and as actual chandeliers with an attractive nighttime glow achieved through a coating of photo-luminescent paint. In the depths of the Water Park’s fountains and pools (water) will lurk the “Crystal City Creature,” a digital life form made from solar-powered Silicon and LED lights.

Installation in the Water Park across from 1750 Crystal Drive should be complete mid-April 2011. Additional information and sketches of the planned work can be found at www.crystalcity.org. A yoga dedication is scheduled for May 3 at 6 PM, with a celebration immediately following. Attendees will get a first look at the completed exhibition and have a chance to meet the artists.

Illumination is part of the Crystal City BID’s ARTFUL program and builds on the success of projects, including Crystal Flight, Eco-Art, Bucky Art, and Art Walls. The ARTFUL program recently received national recognition with the International Downtown Association’s (IDA) Pinnacle Award. The Crystal City BID is responsible for changing how people see and perceive Crystal City, and art remains a critical means of achieving this goal by adding color, interest and conversation to the streets, sidewalks and spaces of Crystal City.
