Area's Fit Week Kicks Off a Season to be Healthy
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Crystal City’s lineup of warm-weather events and programs returns during the first week of May with a celebration of all things “FIT.” Beginning May 2nd, Fit Week launches with Monday Morning Meditation and Yoga, Tuesday’s weekly FRESHFARMS Market, lunchtime Zumba on Wednesdays, Thursday’s 2nd annual mid-day Fit Fair and weekly evening pick-up street hockey games, and closes Friday with a Bulb Blitz/Hub Spin combination.
“What better way to spring into action than a fun series of outdoor fitness programs,” said Crystal City BID President/CEO Angela Fox. “These activities offer opportunities to get and stay Fit, Healthy, and Green all week and all summer long."
Starting at 7 AM on Monday May 2nd and stretching through the end of September, beginners and seasoned yogis are invited to join professional instructors from Sport & Health and flex their way into the week with Morning Meditation and Yoga in the Crystal City Water Park across from 1750 Crystal Drive.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, shop the season opener of the Crystal City FRESHFARM Market along the sidewalk of Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Streets. Featuring a diverse selection of local produce, meats, and cheeses, the weekly market’s season has been expanded almost two months due to popular demand.
The Latin beat returns on Wednesday, May 4th with lunchtime Zumba, now in the larger courtyard area of 2121 Crystal Drive. This weekly class provides participants a free, fast-dancing class led by Sport & Health instructors and runs through the end of September. Participants can even grab a quick, complimentary shower at the Sport & Health Club before returning to work.
In a new partnership with Virginia Hospital Center and the Red Cross, the Fit Fair on Thursday, May 5th will feature blood donations and health screenings, including blood pressure analysis, dermascan facial skin screening, body fat screening, a nutritionist, a stress test booth, men’s and women’s health information, class demonstrations by Sport & Health, and gait analysis with Pacers Running Store. Located along the sidewalk of Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Streets, the Fit Fair classes, exhibits, and demonstrations will be available from 11 AM to 2 PM. The Red Cross Blood Mobile will be onsite between 10 AM and 3 PM collecting lifesaving blood donations from area residents and employees. Sign-up to give blood at www.crystalcity.org.
Thursday, May 5th also marks the launch of a new athletic program in Crystal City, Crystal Rolls – Street Hockey, in partnership with the DC Social Sports Club (DCSSC). Street Hockey enthusiasts can join as individuals ($25) or form a team ($250) for 11 weeks of Thursday evening matches in the parking lot adjacent to 220 Twentieth Street.
On the morning of Friday, May 6th, budding gardeners and flower-lovers can participate in a the second annual Bulb Blitz. As part of the Floral Frenzy program, the Bulb Blitz invites area residents and workers to dig up the thousands of tulip bulbs along Crystal City Drive for planting in their own gardens in the fall. Typically discarded after a single season of blooming, these high quality bulbs will continue to bloom for years.
Fit Week will close Friday, May 6th, with a fun spin around the Crystal City area on two wheels with the Revolution Cycles City Hub. The lunchtime Hub Spin leaves from the City Hub at Noon and will continue on the first Friday of each month through September.
