Clean Up
As part of the Crystal Green program, the BID, in partnership with Canon USA, sponsors a yearly clean-up of the Northern Gateway. The area is an important gateway to Crystal City, and has been plagued by litter and garbage.
2008 Long Bridge Park Clean-Up
On the morning of Saturday, April 12th, 2008, the area of Crystal City formerly known as the “North Tract” and recently renamed “Long Bridge Park,” received some long-needed attention in preparation for upcoming activities and new development.
As the first official project under the Crystal Green umbrella, Canon U.S.A, Arlington County, and the Crystal City Business Improvement District (CCBID) sponsored the volunteer clean-up of the area, which has been plagued with dumping and litter problems. Approximately 24 Canon Employees and their families along with 2 staff members from the Crystal City BID and 2 employees of Crystal green Partner JK Moving & Storage pitched in to fill an entire 25-foot Box truck (over 1500 cubic feet of trash). The total weight of the trash hauled away was estimated at about 4,000-5,000 pounds. JK Moving & Storage provided the truck, disposed of the trash, and recycled sorted and salvageable items.
2009 Northern Gateway Clean-Up
The 2009 Northern Gateway Clean-Up followed last year’s cleanup along the Old Jefferson Davis Highway corridor. Last year’s event, which developed from a partnership with the local Canon office’s Clean Earth Campaign, collected nearly 5,000 pounds of liter and debris – the most ever collected through Canon’s volunteer program.
This clean-up included a partnership with one of the area’s largest landscape companies, Chapel Valley Landscaping. Chapel Valley provided staff, tools, and hauling service for collected materials. Chapel Valley’s expertise also helped to target overgrown shrubs, weeds, and invasive species along the Old Jefferson Davis Highway right-of-way.
