Slugging It
Slugs are special types of carpoolers that catch rides with drivers looking to add passengers in order to meet the HOV-3 requirement along I-95 and I-395 in Northern Virginia and avoid the congestion of the regular lanes during peak hours.
Slugging has been around the Washington Metropolitan area in various forms since the completion of the HOV lanes along I-95 and I-395. Reliable morning slug lines to Crystal City are located at various Commuter Lots along the Interstate corridor including Horner Road, Potomac Mills and Route 610-Stafford. The evening line location to return to these locations can be found at the northern end of Crystal City at 1200 Crystal Drive. You can regularly see a trail of slugs walking north along Crystal Drive carrying small placards with their intended destinations.
The Horner Road and Potomac Mills Commuter lots as well as the Crystal City PM Slug line location have the added advantage of being serviced by the OmniRide Commuter Bus Service (Dale City – Pentagon / Crystal City Line) with seven AM trips into Crystal City between 4:25 AM and 7:20 AM and six PM trips out of Crystal City between 3:28 PM and 6:08 PM. As a result, if a slug has not caught a ride by the last bus, they can easily jump on board the bus as a back-up.
